Hi! I'm a second year student in the MFA Illustration Practice program at Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating in 2019. I am currently focusing on my thesis project, an illustrated narrative about my Latvian grandmother’s experience of displacement during World War II. Before MICA, I worked at Candlewick Press in the design department and self-published mini-comics and zines. Past subjects of interest have included spirituality in architecture, Antonioni’s movies, and the Soviet experience, though all of my narratives explore psychology or emotion. My first illustrations for a graphic novel were published by Candlewick Press in MWD: Hell is Coming Home (2017).
How do I say it? Laila is pronounced lie-lah.
